Individual Therapy for Adults
In individual therapy, we meet one on one to explore and address areas of emotional, social and relationship difficulties which are affecting you. These issues may impact your school or work performance, your relationships, even your day-to-day living. Your situation is unique to you, and I offer both my experience and knowledge in different treatment approaches to provide support, guidance and tools to help you acheive the changes you would like to see in your life.
Areas that are often addressed in individual counseling are: relationship issues, self-esteem, depression, grief, anxiety, substance abuse, eating disorders, job stress, life crises, divorce recovery, anger, childhood abuse/trauma.
Individual Therapy for Children and Adolescents
I especially enjoy counseling for children. As with adults, I meet with children one on one to provide a safe space for them to experience a connection with “their own personal support person”. In the safe therapeutic environment that is just for them, I support children in exploring and expressing their thoughts and feelings, and help to provide a context for them that is appropriate to their developmental stage.
Areas that are often addressed in individual treatment for children are: difficulty or conflict in relationships with family, teachers or peers; depression (which can often manifest as anger or irritability) or anxiety; self-esteem; grief and loss.
Couples Counseling
Therapy for couples focuses on the issues and problems which exist in the relationship between two people. This kind of counseling can help you and your partner identify the areas of conflict and stress in your relationship, as well as what changes are needed for each of you to feel more satisfied in the relationship.
Couples counseling often involves learning different ways of interacting, communicating more effectively, and listening more closely to each other. Therapy can help you and your partner change unhealthy patterns and create a stronger, closer and more fulfilling relationship with each other.
LGBT Couples Counseling
Therapy for any individual or couple is never one-size-fits-all. This is especially true for same-sex partners. Couples counseling for the LGBT community is not the same as in the straight community, and I know that. I’m an Ally and an Advocate for the LGBT community, and I have experience working with the special challenges faced by same-sex couples. I welcome your call to discuss your particular needs further.
Family Therapy
In family therapy, the focus is on helping families change and improve the way families interact by working to increase understanding and facilitate communication within the family unit. Family therapy is often utilized when the family system is contributing to and affected by one family member’s difficulties (such as a child or adolescent, an ill family member, etc).
Effective family therapy does not place the blame on any one family member. Instead, as an important member of the family, each person is each encouraged to express and explore their feelings and become more aware of their role in the family system.
